Lessons Learned and a Heartfelt Thank You
It’s been a whirlwind of a few weeks since we opened the doors of Wendell House, and we’re filled with gratitude for the warm welcome we’ve received from the Crozet community.
Looking back, we’ve learned a few valuable lessons along the way. First and foremost, we’ve been blown away by the incredible support from our customers. You’ve embraced Wendell House with open arms, and it’s truly humbling to see how much our community values small businesses.
We closed for the holidays and reorganized the store. We learned that the potatoes LOVED the front window and all sprouted beautiful green leaves. We moved the food back and have spend the first snowy weeks of January restocking.
We’ve also learned that our neighbors have a serious appetite for delicious food! Fresh bread and baked goods have been a big request. We’re working on that and exploring ways to expand our offerings to include more ready-to-eat meals for busy weeknights.
And let’s not forget the power of whimsy! Those little treasures – the funny towel, the cheese knife shaped like a mouse, the otter pot handle cozy – they’re the items that make our hearts smile and seem to be customer favorites, too. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most special things are the unexpected finds.
Most importantly, we’ve learned that we absolutely love being here. Working together as a family has been an incredible experience. Watching our customers become regulars, getting to know their names and their stories – it truly makes our day. Wendell House feels a bit like “Cheers” sometimes, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
A Personal Note
I wanted to share a personal update with you all. Unfortunately, I will be stepping away from the shop for a few weeks due to a breast cancer diagnosis. This news has been unexpected, but I’m facing it with courage and surrounded by the love and support of my family and friends.
The outpouring of care and concern from our community has been overwhelming, and it’s a testament to the special bond we’ve built. I’ve shared this with a few of our regulars and it reminded me why we started the shop – to create a connection point. I’m incredibly grateful for your understanding and support during this time.
Wendell House will remain open, and I look forward to returning to the shop soon. In the meantime, our parents – Fred and Laura and Pat and Kevin – will help at the shop. We’ve also added a part-time person, Ruth, who is a delight. Many of you already know Ruth from around the neighborhood.
Please know that we’re in good hands, and we’ll continue to bring you the same warmth, charm, and carefully curated selection of goods that you’ve come to expect. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being a part of the Wendell House story.
